As always, the red carpet was a highlight of the night, with many of Hollywood's brightest stars showing off their fashion choices. Some of the most notable looks included:

Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Actress for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," stunned in a sparkling silver gown by Elie Saab.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," looked elegant in her sparkly tan dress.

Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Tar," made a statement in her Louis Vuitton dress.

I would also like to add that Salma Hayek turned heads in her shiny gown.

Lady Gaga was quite vampy in her sheer Versace dress.

But it wasn't just about the women's fashion. The men also brought their A-game, with Colin Farrell looking dapper in a classic tuxedo and Austin Butler adding a modern twist with a white tuxedo jacket and black pants.

Performances

The Academy Awards are always a showcase for incredible musical performances, and this year was no exception. Some of the standout performances included:

Rihanna, who performed "Lift Me Up" from the soundtrack of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." She was joined on stage by a group of dancers, and her powerful vocals brought the audience to their feet.

No one was quite excited for the show considering what is happening around the world. The date was already changed, they did not use the same venue and no one knew whether it would take place online or not.

However, it turned out to be entertaining. Regina King did the opening -her monologue was great as she spoke about the people of colour- and the presenters also seemed to be enjoying their duty. The ceremony felt more intimate as compared to the previous ones and it was less stuffy. Bryan Cranston presented the Humanitarian Award, Parasite director Bong Joon-ho shared what the nominees of Best Director category thinks of filmmaking. 

Fakat şunu da söylemem gerekiyor ki tören biraz aceleye getirilmiş gibiydi. Örneğin, "In Memoriam" yani ölenlerin anıldığı montaj çok kısa ve hızlıydı. Bunu da biraz saygısızca buldum açıkçası. I must also say that it felt a bit rushed. For instance, In Memoriam montage was quite short and fast and I found it to be disrespectful. Besides, the last category was the "Best Actor in a Leading Role", not the "Best Picture" as we are used to and Anthony Hopkins was not even there to receive his award which gave an abrupt ending to the ceremony.

However, it was quite a shock that Mr. Hopkins won and he also broke the record of Christopher Plummer as the oldest winner of the award at 83.

For me, the most enjoyable moment was when Yuh-Jung Youn won the award for the "Best Actress in a Supporting Role". She flirted with Brad Pitt and praised all the other nominees as well.

Also I should mention Tyler Perry's speech as well. He won an honorary Oscar and spoke against hate. It was quite moving and I want to quote him: "My mother taught me to refuse hate. She taught me to refuse blanket judgment. And in this time, and with all of the internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way, the 24-hour news cycle, it is my hope that all of us will teach our kids … just refuse hate. Don’t hate anybody. I refuse to hate someone because they are Mexican or because they are Black or white or LGBTQ. I refuse to hate someone because they are a police officer. I refuse to hate someone because they are Asian. I would hope that we would refuse hate".

GREASE (1978)

    Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey ve ek şarkı yazımıyla John Farrar tarafından 1971’de yapılan Grease müzikali o zamandan beri her yaştan kitleye hitap eden bir müzikal. Adını 1950’ler sonrası Amerika’da çalışan genç kitleye takılan “greasers”  lakabından alan Grease, lise yıllarında geçen bir aşk hikâyesini farklı karakter çatışmaları ile gözler önüne seriyor. Senaryoyu müzikleriyle zenginleştiren bu oyun Broadway’in en uzun soluklu yapımlarından biri. 

    Made in 1971 by Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey, and additional songwriting by John Farrar, the Grease musical has since been a musical for audiences of all ages. Grease, which takes its name from the nickname "greasers", which was given to the young people working in America after the 1950s, reveals a love story set in high school with different character conflicts. This play, which enriches the script with its soundtracks, is one of Broadway's longest running productions.

    Aldığı olumlu eleştiriler sonucu 1978 yılında filme çevrilen oyunun başrollerini o dönemde dansları ve oyunculuğu ile ön planda olan John Travolta ile Olivia Newton-John paylaşıyor. Hem eleştirilerde hem de gişe hasılatında tam puan alan bu film, müzikal ile ufak farklılıklar gösteriyor. Oyunun açılış sahnesi, karakterlerin ilk karşılaşma anı ve okul kıyafetlerinin rengi değişmiş olsa da film bir klasik olarak kalmaya devam ediyor.

    John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who were at the forefront with their dance moves and acting skills at the time, shared the leading roles of the play, which was adapted into a film in 1978 as a result of positive reviews. The film, which received full points in both criticism and box office revenue, differs slightly from the musical. Even though the play's opening scene, the moment the characters first meet, and the colour of the school uniforms were altered, the film remains a classic.

ABBA grubunun şarkıları kullanılan bu müzikal, evlenmek üzere olan Sophie’nin babasını arama çabasını anlatıyor. Karmaşık ilişkileri neşeli bir dille anlatan oyun bir Yunan adasında geçiyor.

    "Mamma Mia!" written by British playwright Catherine Johnson is one of the most famous musicals in the world. This play, which has been translated into different languages and played, usually plays to a full house. This musical, which uses songs from the band ABBA, is about Sophie’s quest to search for her father. The play, which talks about complex relationships in a cheerful language, takes place on a Greek island.

    2008 yılında çekilen film versiyonunda başrolleri Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan ve Amanda Seyfried paylaşıyor.     The film version, shot in 2008, stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried. The director of the film, Phyllida Llyod, also directed the original Broadway play. There is not much difference between the musical and the film adaptation, only a few songs were not used in the film. Still, this shortcoming did not overshadow the film's box office success.

NINE (2009)

    Federico Fellini’nin yarı otobiyografik olma özelliği taşıyan 1963 yapımı “Otto e Mezzo” filmi üzerinden yazılan Nine müzikali aslında bir ders projesi olarak ortaya çıkmış. Maury Yeston’ın yazdığı ve 1982 yılında Broadway yapımı olarak sahnelenen bu müzikal Tony ödülleri de kazanmış ve oldukça beğenilmiş. Orta yaş bunalımında olan 40’lı yaşlardaki yönetmen Guido Contini’nin kaybetmeye başladığı yaratıcılığını ve kadınlarla olan ilişkisini konu alan bu müzikalde Guido’nun dengeyi kurmak için nasıl çabaladığını seyrediyoruz.

    The "Nine" musical, based on Federico Fellini's 1963 movie "Otto e Mezzo", which is semi-autobiographical, actually emerged as a lecture project. Written by Maury Yeston and staged as a Broadway production in 1982, this musical Tony won awards and was highly appreciated. In this musical we watch how Guido Contini, who is in his mid-life crisis as a forty something, begins to lose his creativity and his successful relationships with women which pushes him to try to balance everything.

    Beyazperdeye 2009 yılında Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson, ve Stacy Ferguson gibi başarılı oyuncularla aktarılan filmin oyunla arasında çok büyük farklılık yok. Film için ekstra olarak sadece yeni şarkılar yazılmış. İzleyenler için ise Guido’nun hayalleri ve gerçek hayatı arasındaki farklılıkları filmde fark etmek daha rahatken oyunda bu ayrım çok da net verilmiyor.

    The film, which was adapted into the big screen in 2009 with successful actors such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson, and Stacy Ferguson, does not differ greatly from the play. Only some new songs were written as extra for the film. For those who watch it, it is easier to notice the differences between Guido's dreams and real life in the film, but this distinction is not very clear in the play.

HAIR (1979)

    James Rado ve Gerome Ragni tarafından yazılan oyun 1967’de sergilenmeye başlanmış. Hippi kültürünü ve Vietnam savaşına karşıtlığı konu edinen bu oyun küfürlü konuşmalar ve çıplak sahneler içerdiği için çok ses getirmiş. Hippilerin New York’taki bohem hayatları müziklerle çok güzel bir şekilde yansıtılmış ve herkesin şu an aşina olduğu “Let The Sunshine In” şarkısı da yıllarca dillere pelesenk olmuş haliyle. 

    Written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, the play began to be shown in 1967. This play, which is about the hippie culture and the opposition to the Vietnam War, has made a lot of noise because it contains abusive speech and nude scenes. The bohemian lives of the hippies in New York are reflected very well with the music, and the song "Let The Sunshine In", which everyone is familiar with now, has been sung by many.

    The film adaptation, directed by Milos Forman, was released in 1979. Starring actors such as John Savage and Treat Williams, the film is among the classics of the history of world cinema. There are many differences between the musical version and the screen adaptation. The places where the characters live and the events that happen to them have been changed. While the musical focuses more on the American peace movement and the love affair between the hippies, the film emphasizes the carefree life of the hippies. Still, it should be remarked that both versions are impressive.

LES MISERABLES (2012)

    1980 yılında Paris’te, 1985 yılında West End’de ve 1987 yılında Broadway'de sahnelenmeye başlanan oyun Victor Hugo’nun sefiller isimli romanından konusunu alıyor. Oyunda eski mahkûm olan Jean Valjean'ın nasıl yaşam mücadelesini verdiğini, diğer karakterlerle olan ilişkisini ve Fransa’daki siyasi karışıklığı izliyoruz. West End’de en uzun soluklu müzikal olmasının yanı sıra dünyada da ikinci en uzun soluklu müzikal olarak kabul ediliyor. 

    The play that was first staged in Paris in 1980, at the West End in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987 is based on Victor Hugo's novel The Miserable. In the play, we watch how ex-convict Jean Valjean struggles to survive, his relationship with other characters and the political turmoil in France. In addition to being the longest running musical in the West End, it is also regarded as the second longest running musical in the world.

    Klasikleşen bu yapıtın filmleri de birden fazla oldu. 1952’den itibaren pek çok filmi çekilen bu oyunun en ses getiren uyarlaması 2012 yılında geldi.     There were more than one adaptations of this classic work. The most prominent adaptation of this play, which has had many film versions since 1952, came in 2012. Directed by Tom Hooper, the film stars highly successful actors such as Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anna Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried. The film, which was granted with many awards including the Academy and BAFTA awards, received positive reviews from the critics. The fact that the music was recorded live during the shooting phase is another factor that played a role in making this film outstanding.

En son buraya yazdığımdan beri uzun bir süre geçtiğinin farkındayım. Düşündüğümden daha zor oldu bu pandemi dönemi. İnişlerim çıkışlarım oldu ve kendimi toplamaya çalıştım, en sevdiğim konulardan biriyle ilgili bir yazı paylaşarak muhteşem bir geri dönüş yapmak istedim: Filmler!

I know that it's been a while since I last posted here. It's due to this unprecedented pandemic that struck me harder than I thought. I've had my share of ups and downs and endeavoured to gather myself up and decided to make a grand entrance with a post related to one of my loves: Films!

To begin with, lately I've seen around 50 films and 20 television series- three of which had 5 seasons. Your inner voice is probably vituperating me but sorry not sorry, we've been locked up for months and I enjoy this cinematic world A LOT.

Swallow (2019) filmini incelemek istedim çünkü son zamanlarda karşılaştığım en tuhaf filmlerden biri oldu. Yönetmen Carlo Mirabella-Davis ve bildiğim kadarıyla bu onun ilk uzun metraj filmi. Sinematografisi oldukça sürükleyici ve Katelin Arizmendi işinde mükemmel görünüyor. Konuyla daha fazla ilgilenen veya profesyonel bilgiye sahip olanlar için, aşağıya video bırakacağım:

I wanted to review Swallow (2019) because it's one of the most bizarre films I've come across in the recent times. The director is Carlo Mirabella-Davis and as far as I'm concerned, this is his first feature film. The cinematography is quite gripping and Katelin Arizmendi seems to excel at her work. For those of you who are more interested in the subject or have a professional knowledge, I'll just leave the following video here:

Even from the get-go, the film gives you a sense of discomfort because everything seems quite proportionate. Let's delve into the topic and allow me to warn you because there will be spoilers. Hunter, who is played by Haley Bennett, has married into a perfect family. She has a husband looking almost like a doll, he has a family who is there all the time to support him and she somehow seems lost among them. We never see her family or she never talks about them which initially made me think that she was either an orphan or her family lived far away. Even at one point, her mother-in-law asks whether she is really happy or she is merely faking it. She then replies by saying it is genuine but we never get that expression from her face. Later on, she reads a book which tells to do spontaneous things and she feels tempted. She feels drawn to a marble and then she swallows it, revealing where the title is coming from. She tries to open up to her husband that night but she decides to keep that to herself and just does not dwell upon it. The next morning though, while she is vacuuming the carpet, she comes across a thumbtack and tries to swallow it. Failing to do so, she puts it on the counter and goes away. Feeling more drawn to it, she does not resist anymore and eats it. She develops the habit of eating sharp objects/non-food items including a safety pin, a chess piece, a battery, etc. When this is discovered while she is having an ultrasound scan, her life turns upside down because her husband seems to drift apart and she thinks she has failed him. She mainly tries to make him happy and this has been the way from the opening of the film.

Then comes the verdict; she has pica! This is the tendency to eat non-food items triggered by pregnancy or stress and mostly due to the lack of iron in the body. Knowing the situation, her husband and his family try their best to handle the situation because the baby is in danger. They hire a professional to look after her since they cannot be at home all the time and she feels more prone to eating metals as a way of escaping the stress she has been under. She hides some nails in the toilet and secretly continues swallowing them. She begins to see a psychologist and there she reveals that she was an unwanted child but her mother did not get abortion because according to her beliefs it was wrong. However, Hunter seems to be haunted by this and she neither feels in control over her life nor her body. By swallowing these things, she says that she feels in control. This fact horrifies her husband and his family which lead them to make a decision. She has to be put down in a psychiatric hospital. She manages to run away and when we think that she has done it because she did not want to go to the hospital, she actually wanted to confront her biological father. He is now married with a girl and Hunter asks whether she is bad like him. He seems to be in agony because of remembering the things he did in the past and says that he loves him and she is a good person. With relief, Hunter goes to get some abortion pills to have a miscarriage because she does not want this baby just because his husband wants and she wants to control the situation.

At first sight, this might sound gore or relentless but when you read between the lines, this is her unique way of coping with the things she feels stranger to. Knowing that her biological father took advantage of her mother and she did not have any control over the situation has wounded her soul. Her mother accepted the rules of her belief or the rules put by the society because if she conforms, this makes her a good woman. This idea is completely wrong but coming from that family, Hunter seems to have kept her silence and tried to lived like her mother without any trouble but her body began to show some reactions which is the pika syndrome here. This is about female autonomy. The extent that Hunter can go to defy the oppressive society or the patriarchal world deserve a deeper reading. The film becomes disturbing when she does things that are not accepted in the society. Yes, swallowing such items may not be the right choice but there are a lot of choices that she is not offered to begin with. Her childhood period is not revealed but it can be deduced that she had a difficult one. She was not treated right, she had a trauma and even though she tried to keep things locked down, they finally emerged in a perturbative way.

Yukarıda bahsettiğim gibi sinematografisi oldukça şaşırtıcı. Mükemmelliği en başta hissediyorsunuz ancak garip hissetmenizi sağlayan unsurlar da var. Sahneler çoğunlukla pastel renklere sahip ancak özellikle Hunter hakkında bir sahne olduğunda kırmızı renk kullanımı fazlasıyla var. Hunter bir çatışma içinde gibi görünüyor ve hamileliği için izleyici olarak biz de asla mutlu hissetmiyoruz çünkü ondan Hunter da oldukça rahatsız görünüyor.

The cinematography as I mentioned above is quite astonishing. You feel the perfection from the beginning but there are also elements that make you feel the uncanny. The scenes have mostly soft colours but also there is a use of the colour red many times, especially when it is about Hunter. She seems to be in a conflict and we never feel happy for her pregnancy since she seems quite uncomfortable with it.

Onun hareketlerini haklı çıkarmıyorum ya da pica savunucusu olduğumu iddia etmiyorum ve bu filmin konusu da değil zaten. Hunter, itaat gerektiren bu sözde mükemmel toplumdan çıkış yolu bulmaya çalışan bir kadın ve beklentileri karşılamayınca da akıl hastanesine yatırılma gibi sonuçlara maruz kalmayı göze almalıdır. I'm not justifying her actions or claiming that I'm pro-pica and this is not the point of the film either. Hunter is a woman trying to find a way out of this so-called perfect society which demands obedience and if she does not conform to the expectations then she has to suffer consequences aka being constitutionalized. I can't say that this is a masterpiece and you should definitely see it when you get the chance, but you might want to give it a try if you want to see things from a different point of view and how this common topic can be conveyed with a different genre.

Uzun zamandır ilk defa ödül töreninde bu kadar keyif aldım. Kategorilerdeki tüm seçimlerden çok memnunum. Ödül törenine geçmeden önce kırmızı halıdan da bahsetmek istiyorum çünkü tüm adaylar oldukça etkileyiciydi. Ayrıca Natalie Portman'ın Dior elbisesine adaylık alamayan tüm kadın yönetmenlerin ismini işlemesi de muazzam bir detaydı.

It's actually been a long time since I last enjoyed this ceremony. I'm literally happy with all the picks in all the categories. Before moving onto the award ceremony, I'd like to talk about the red carpet because all the nominees looked quite ravishing. Besides, Natalie Portman had a Dior gown, on which the names of female directors who were not nominated at the ceremony were embroidered. It was a great way to honour them.

There weren't any hosts this year just like the previous one. I actually do not care about this because all the award presenters were quite funny and I think that way the ceremony does not continue any longer than it should. I really enjoyed the opening show Janelle Monáe put out. She included dancers dressed as the cast from all the Best Picture nominees. You can watch it here. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph were also hilarious. You can also watch them here. What had a big effect on the audience is actually the moment Eminem stepped out on the stage. He won an Oscar for "Lose Yourself" 18 years ago but he didn't attend the ceremony thinking that it would be in vain because there was no chance for him to win. He missed out on this and now after all these years, he came back to do what he couldn't do back then. Everyone was surprised, it was kept like a secret and I was way too much happy to witness this. You can watch his performance here. Then there was an "In Memoriam" montage where they honoured the people who passed away. Billie Eilish sang "Yesterday" during that scene. I can't say that I enjoyed her performance. Also Luke Perry was not shown in the video and I have no idea why.

I got to see all the nominees in the biggest categories so I'm frankly happy that all my favourites were picked. I just thought that Sam Mendes would won the Oscar as the Best Director but it went to "Parasite" yet again I'm okay with that because it was my number one film in all the nominations. So happy to see that for the first time a non-English win has won the Best Picture award.
