İzlediğim son filmlerden biri olan "Mumyalar" hakkındaki düşüncelerimi şimdi sizler için hemen yazıyorum. 👀 Macera ve aksiyon dolu bir film olan "Mumyalar", sizi eski Mısır ve modern Londra'da unutulmaz bir maceraya götürüyor. Hikaye, kraliyet ailesine ait eski bir yüzüğün, hırslı bir arkeolog tarafından çalınması üzerine üç mumyanın yola çıkmasıyla başlıyor.

Filmin hızlı tempolu aksiyon ve macerası beni çok etkiledi. NINE (2009)

    The "Nine" musical, based on Federico Fellini's 1963 movie "Otto e Mezzo", which is semi-autobiographical, actually emerged as a lecture project. Written by Maury Yeston and staged as a Broadway production in 1982, this musical Tony won awards and was highly appreciated. In this musical we watch how Guido Contini, who is in his mid-life crisis as a forty something, begins to lose his creativity and his successful relationships with women which pushes him to try to balance everything.

For those who watch it, it is easier to notice the differences between Guido's dreams and real life in the film, but this distinction is not very clear in the play.

HAIR (1979)

    James Rado ve Gerome Ragni tarafından yazılan oyun 1967’de sergilenmeye başlanmış. Hippi kültürünü ve Vietnam savaşına karşıtlığı konu edinen bu oyun küfürlü konuşmalar ve çıplak sahneler içerdiği için çok ses getirmiş. Hippilerin New York’taki bohem hayatları müziklerle çok güzel bir şekilde yansıtılmış ve herkesin şu an aşina olduğu “Let The Sunshine In” şarkısı da yıllarca dillere pelesenk olmuş haliyle. 

    Written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, the play began to be shown in 1967. This play, which is about the hippie culture and the opposition to the Vietnam War, has made a lot of noise because it contains abusive speech and nude scenes. The bohemian lives of the hippies in New York are reflected very well with the music, and the song "Let The Sunshine In", which everyone is familiar with now, has been sung by many.

    The film adaptation, directed by Milos Forman, was released in 1979. Starring actors such as John Savage and Treat Williams, the film is among the classics of the history of world cinema. There are many differences between the musical version and the screen adaptation. The places where the characters live and the events that happen to them have been changed. While the musical focuses more on the American peace movement and the love affair between the hippies, the film emphasizes the carefree life of the hippies. Still, it should be remarked that both versions are impressive.

LES MISERABLES (2012)

    1980 yılında Paris’te, 1985 yılında West End’de ve 1987 yılında Broadway'de sahnelenmeye başlanan oyun Victor Hugo’nun sefiller isimli romanından konusunu alıyor. Oyunda eski mahkûm olan Jean Valjean'ın nasıl yaşam mücadelesini verdiğini, diğer karakterlerle olan ilişkisini ve Fransa’daki siyasi karışıklığı izliyoruz. West End’de en uzun soluklu müzikal olmasının yanı sıra dünyada da ikinci en uzun soluklu müzikal olarak kabul ediliyor. 

    The play that was first staged in Paris in 1980, at the West End in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987 is based on Victor Hugo's novel The Miserable. In the play, we watch how ex-convict Jean Valjean struggles to survive, his relationship with other characters and the political turmoil in France. In addition to being the longest running musical in the West End, it is also regarded as the second longest running musical in the world.

En son buraya yazdığımdan beri uzun bir süre geçtiğinin farkındayım. Düşündüğümden daha zor oldu bu pandemi dönemi. İnişlerim çıkışlarım oldu ve kendimi toplamaya çalıştım, en sevdiğim konulardan biriyle ilgili bir yazı paylaşarak muhteşem bir geri dönüş yapmak istedim: Filmler!

I know that it's been a while since I last posted here. It's due to this unprecedented pandemic that struck me harder than I thought. I've had my share of ups and downs and endeavoured to gather myself up and decided to make a grand entrance with a post related to one of my loves: Films!

To begin with, lately I've seen around 50 films and 20 television series- three of which had 5 seasons. Your inner voice is probably vituperating me but sorry not sorry, we've been locked up for months and I enjoy this cinematic world A LOT.

Swallow (2019) filmini incelemek istedim çünkü son zamanlarda karşılaştığım en tuhaf filmlerden biri oldu. Yönetmen Carlo Mirabella-Davis ve bildiğim kadarıyla bu onun ilk uzun metraj filmi. I wanted to review Swallow (2019) because it's one of the most bizarre films I've come across in the recent times. The director is Carlo Mirabella-Davis and as far as I'm concerned, this is his first feature film. The cinematography is quite gripping and Katelin Arizmendi seems to excel at her work. For those of you who are more interested in the subject or have a professional knowledge, I'll just leave the following video here:

Even from the get-go, the film gives you a sense of discomfort because everything seems quite proportionate. Let's delve into the topic and allow me to warn you because there will be spoilers. Hunter, who is played by Haley Bennett, has married into a perfect family. She has a husband looking almost like a doll, he has a family who is there all the time to support him and she somehow seems lost among them. We never see her family or she never talks about them which initially made me think that she was either an orphan or her family lived far away. Even at one point, her mother-in-law asks whether she is really happy or she is merely faking it. She then replies by saying it is genuine but we never get that expression from her face. Later on, she reads a book which tells to do spontaneous things and she feels tempted. She feels drawn to a marble and then she swallows it, revealing where the title is coming from. She tries to open up to her husband that night but she decides to keep that to herself and just does not dwell upon it. The next morning though, while she is vacuuming the carpet, she comes across a thumbtack and tries to swallow it. Failing to do so, she puts it on the counter and goes away. Feeling more drawn to it, she does not resist anymore and eats it. She develops the habit of eating sharp objects/non-food items including a safety pin, a chess piece, a battery, etc. When this is discovered while she is having an ultrasound scan, her life turns upside down because her husband seems to drift apart and she thinks she has failed him. She mainly tries to make him happy and this has been the way from the opening of the film.

Then comes the verdict; she has pica! This is the tendency to eat non-food items triggered by pregnancy or stress and mostly due to the lack of iron in the body. Knowing the situation, her husband and his family try their best to handle the situation because the baby is in danger. They hire a professional to look after her since they cannot be at home all the time and she feels more prone to eating metals as a way of escaping the stress she has been under. She hides some nails in the toilet and secretly continues swallowing them. She begins to see a psychologist and there she reveals that she was an unwanted child but her mother did not get abortion because according to her beliefs it was wrong. However, Hunter seems to be haunted by this and she neither feels in control over her life nor her body. By swallowing these things, she says that she feels in control. This fact horrifies her husband and his family which lead them to make a decision. She has to be put down in a psychiatric hospital. She manages to run away and when we think that she has done it because she did not want to go to the hospital, she actually wanted to confront her biological father. He is now married with a girl and Hunter asks whether she is bad like him. He seems to be in agony because of remembering the things he did in the past and says that he loves him and she is a good person. With relief, Hunter goes to get some abortion pills to have a miscarriage because she does not want this baby just because his husband wants and she wants to control the situation.

At first sight, this might sound gore or relentless but when you read between the lines, this is her unique way of coping with the things she feels stranger to. Knowing that her biological father took advantage of her mother and she did not have any control over the situation has wounded her soul. Her mother accepted the rules of her belief or the rules put by the society because if she conforms, this makes her a good woman. This idea is completely wrong but coming from that family, Hunter seems to have kept her silence and tried to lived like her mother without any trouble but her body began to show some reactions which is the pika syndrome here. This is about female autonomy. The extent that Hunter can go to defy the oppressive society or the patriarchal world deserve a deeper reading. The film becomes disturbing when she does things that are not accepted in the society. Yes, swallowing such items may not be the right choice but there are a lot of choices that she is not offered to begin with. Her childhood period is not revealed but it can be deduced that she had a difficult one. She was not treated right, she had a trauma and even though she tried to keep things locked down, they finally emerged in a perturbative way.

Yukarıda bahsettiğim gibi sinematografisi oldukça şaşırtıcı. Mükemmelliği en başta hissediyorsunuz ancak garip hissetmenizi sağlayan unsurlar da var. Sahneler çoğunlukla pastel renklere sahip ancak özellikle Hunter hakkında bir sahne olduğunda kırmızı renk kullanımı fazlasıyla var. Hunter bir çatışma içinde gibi görünüyor ve hamileliği için izleyici olarak biz de asla mutlu hissetmiyoruz çünkü ondan Hunter da oldukça rahatsız görünüyor.

The cinematography as I mentioned above is quite astonishing. You feel the perfection from the beginning but there are also elements that make you feel the uncanny. The scenes have mostly soft colours but also there is a use of the colour red many times, especially when it is about Hunter. She seems to be in a conflict and we never feel happy for her pregnancy since she seems quite uncomfortable with it.

I'm not justifying her actions or claiming that I'm pro-pica and this is not the point of the film either. Hunter is a woman trying to find a way out of this so-called perfect society which demands obedience and if she does not conform to the expectations then she has to suffer consequences aka being constitutionalized. I can't say that this is a masterpiece and you should definitely see it when you get the chance, but you might want to give it a try if you want to see things from a different point of view and how this common topic can be conveyed with a different genre.

One of the most anticipated film and I am so glad that Joaquin Phoenix has won an Oscar as the best actor in a leading role... I'm talking about Joker of course!

Açıkçası, Joker benim en sevdiğim karakter ve bu yazıda taraflı olmamayı deneyeceğim ama bazen kontrolden çıkabilirim o yüzden beni önceden affedin. Sizi olası spoiler konusunda da uyarmam gerekiyor. Quite frankly, Joker is my favourite character and I'll try not to be biased on this post but I might derail sometimes, so forgive me in advance. And let me warn you about the potential spoilers as well. It will sadden me if you still haven't watched it. Please do not be biased and watch it without any prejudice. Give a chance to this Joker!

We are all aware that the acting Heath Ledger put out was astonishing and we thought that nothing could ever top that. I still believe it, though. As an action packed film, it was quite gripping. On the other hand, this fresh-out-of-oven Joker differs from the previous one in terms of its genre. This has a more emotional side, more perspective to the life of Joker himself. Therefore, we associate ourselves with the protagonist from the very first opening scene of the film and can't help but support his even perturbative and preposterous acts. We reason with him because we are rendered as mere audience to the suffering he is going through. At one point he remarks, "Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?" which immediately strikes us because we have experienced the pain with him.

Joaquin Phoenix portrays another type of Joker as I mentioned above. He puts out a Joker that is emotionally unstable, has a condition which makes him laugh during inappropriate moments, is looking for a tether that will stabilize his roots on earth and tries to make sense of the world. He goes mad on such a refine level that it almost becomes a performance. The way Phoenix shows the emotional breakdown of Joker gets under your skin and it is impossible not to be influenced. He has lost a fair percentage of his weight which aggravates the evil condition Joker is in. He is a loner, he lives with his mother and he enjoys watching Murray Franklin's show because he actually aspires to be like him in the comedy world. He endeavours to be deemed as a funny man and he wants to make people laugh but he fails each time because he is different than others due to his condition and his lack of human connection. He even embodies him as a father role model and wants to make him proud as well. However, one day his stand-up video is shown during the show and he is made fun of. This puts him off. He also has been an outcast and punched by many in the streets. Who wouldn't go bananas and stand against the society, right?

We should also look into his parents because even if it is sometimes about nature, nurture plays a significant role as well. His mother is suffering from mental illness and he is actually adopted. He gets to know this the point he confronts with his pseudo-father which adds to his craziness and disturbed state of mind. It is significant to underline the fact that he was neglected and did not have a decent family life. Even this reason alone is enough for him to become socially awkard, he still tries his best to blend in with the society. He goes to children's hospital to make them smile even though he is pretty much the opposite and quite unhappy. He sings the song "If You're Happy And You Know It" but he has actually never been happy. Isn't this the worldwide problem of the clowns to be honest? They are expected to be happy and make people laugh but no one thinks about them. (My sentiments are kicking in right now, sorry.)

As the film unfolds, we get to see the Wayne family. It rings a bell, right? The story of Bruce Wayne aka The Batman begins here. His parents gets shot in the street after Joker is arrested due to murdering Murray Franklin during the live show. So what will happen in the sequel?

As much as I love cliffhangers, I don't know whether I'll be able to put up with my excitement because I'm already dreaming about the upcoming film! Meanwhile, Joker is probably sitting there and laughing evilly as I stan for him and all his craziness.

Bu vesileyle ben de belki onları tekrar izlemek için kendime bahane yaratmış olurum :) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind filmini önermekten de önerilmesinden de yoruldum, o yüzden daha farklı bir liste oluşturmaya çalışacağım :)

Since the Valentine's Day has arrived, I'll list you my favourite romance films. Maybe I'll also urge myself to see them again :) I got tired of recommending and being recommended to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so I'll try to list different films :)

1- Love Actually (2003)

Bu filmi yılbaşı zamanı da izlemeyi çok seviyorum. İngiltere'de geçiyor ve birbirinden farklı 8 çiftin hayatına konuk oluyoruz. Hem eğlenceli hem romantik bir film. İzlerken duygusal anlar da yaşıyorsunuz, kahkaha krizine de giriyorsunuz. Tanıdık kadro da cabası! Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson ve daha birçok oyuncu!

I also love seeing this film during Christmas time. It is set in UK and we see the lives of 8 different couples. The film is both funny and romantic. You sometimes feel moved, sometimes burst into laughter. The cast is the bonus part of the film! Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and so on!

2- Ghost (1990)

Yakın zamanda Zorlu PSM'de müzikalini izleme fırsatı da yakaladığım eski ancak eskimeyen bu filmi de listeye kesinlikle almalıydım. Dönemine göre gerek çekimleri gerekse konusu itibariyle ilgi çekici olduğunu düşünüyorum. Patrick Swayze'yi bu filmle tanıyıp çok sevmiştim, öldüğü zaman da aşırı üzülmüştüm. Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg gibi tanınmış birçok oyuncu da filme eşlik ediyor.

I had to put this film into this list. As you may know, I had the chance to attend its musical at Zorlu PSM and this film might be old but it will never go out of date. I believe that for its time, it is kind of groundbreaking. I got to know Patrick Swayze after seeing this film and I felt quite saddened when he passed away. A lot of acknowledged people such as Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg are also present in this film.

3- While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Sanırım buraya kadar fark etmişsinizdir, 90 ve 00 yapımlarını seviyorum. O senelerde çekilen filmlerin farklı bir dokusu var sanki. Bu filmde Sandra Bullock çok iyi bir oyunculuk çıkartıyor. Komedi filmi gibi başlıyor ancak giderek romantik bir hal alıyor. Yine zaman zaman gülüyor zaman zaman üzülüyorsunuz. Şahsen keyif aldığım filmlerden bir tanesidir.

I believe you have come to realise that I love films made in 90s and 00s. It is as if films that were produced during those years have a different texture. In this film, Sandra Bullock is the protagonist and she is really good. When the film begins, you get the vibe that it will be fun but it becomes more dramatic as the plot reveals itself. You sometimes find yourself laughing, and sometimes pondering upon the meaning of love. I personally enjoy this one a lot. 

4- You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Bence komedi filmleri bu filmden sonra hiçbir zaman güzel olmadı. İzlerken yine aşırı keyif aldığım filmlerden bir tanesi. Tom Hanks ve Meg Ryan'ın kimyası çok güzel tutmuş. İnternetten tanışan bu çiftin tatlı hikayesini mutlaka izlemelisiniz.

I think none of the films released after this one, had the capacity to reach to this level of fun. It is one of those films that I do enjoy. The chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is undeniable. You should see this sweet story of this couple who meet online if you still haven't.

5- Dragonfly (2002)

Kevin Costner benim gözümde hep aşk adamı olmuştur. The Bodyguard ile bu film arasında çok kaldım ancak bu filmin daha az bilindiğini düşünerek bunu önermek istedim. Türü listedeki filmlere göre biraz farklı. NDE dediğimiz ölüme yaklaşan kişilerin deneyimlerinden, ölen eşine ulaşmaya çalışan aşık bir adamı izliyoruz. O günden beri boynumdan çıkarmadığım bir yusufçuk kolyem var :)

Kevin Costner has always been a man of love for me. I hesitated whether writing The Bodyguard or this one but then I thought that the latter one was less recognized so I went with this one. Its genre is a bit different compared to others. We see a man trying to communicate with his dead lover through people who had NDE (near death experience). I bought a dragonfly necklace the day I saw this film :)

90. Akademi Ödülleri (The 90th Academy Awards)

"And the Oscar goes to..."

Oscar gecesine geri sayım yapmayı çok seviyorum, beni hep mutlu ediyor bu gece. Herhangi bir standart belirlemiyor ya da bir filmi yüceltirken geri kalanları aşağılamıyor. Bu sadece bir gösteri ancak dürüstlüklerine ve eşit olma çabalarına inanabilsem daha çok severdim, orası kesin.

I love counting down to Oscars night because it always makes me happy. It surely does not set standarts or praise a film and dispraise the rest. It is just a show but I would love it even more if I believed in their sincerity and equality.

Jimmy Kimmel was the host of this year and I wasn't sure if he would manage it but he did it well. His references to Trump, the way he underlined equality and his sense of humour were on point. He even promised to gift a jet ski for the shortest acceptance speech. It was a hilarious moment. He presented it along Helen Mirren. The winner was Mark Bridges at the end of the night.

Beni en çok şaşırtan ve geceyi özel kılan şey sadece Oscar'ın 90. doğum günü olması değildi. "A Wrinkle In Time" filmini seyredenlerden oluşan bir sinemaya gizli kamera koymuşlardı. Sinemaya giden seyirciler olmadan hiçbir şeyin önemli olmayacağını vurgulamak istemişlerdi çünkü sinema çift taraflı bir deneyim ve seyircileri ünlülerle şaşırtarak kutlamak istemişti Jimmy. One of the things that surprised me and rendered this night special was not only the fact that it was the 90th birthday of this event but also they hid cameras into a cinema where people were watching "A Wrinkle In Time". They wanted to emphasize the fact that without filmgoers, none of them would matter. The cinema is a mutual experience so he wanted to celebrate it by surprising them with the celebrities. Some of the guests went with Jimmy Kimmel and they brought snacks as well. First Gal Gadot entered and everyone cheered. Then the screen showed the people at the Oscars and they thanked the filmgoers. Later the other celebrities walked in handing out the snacks. It must have felt very different for the audience there. It's once in a lifetime experience!

Frances McDormand'ın ödül kabul konuşmasından da bahsetmek istiyorum. Onu çok seviyorum ve çok yetenekli birisi. Hala filminin nasıl "En İyi Film" ödülünü kazanmadığını merak ediyorum. I also want to mention Frances McDormand's acceptance speech. I love her so much and she is really talented. I'm still surprised at the fact that her film failed to win the "Best Picture" award. She wanted to show that equality matters and I hope her "inclusion rider" message at the end affected some people with high power.

My predictions usually turn out to be right but this year one thing really disappointed me. I knew that Guillermo Del Toro would win some of his nominations but he did not deserve to win "Best Picture" award. It counts as a transgression for me since the film is about a woman falling in love with a weird creature. I understand that he loves making fantastic films and he is quite good at it. However, this is too much and just because a mute woman and an other worldly creature are outcasts, it does not mean that they have to end up together. It feels forced and the ending at the water did not move me, instead it bothered the hell out of me! Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the winner for me.
